Per-app mute guide

How to mute one app on Mac without muting everything

Mute a single Mac app while music, calls, or other apps keep playing at their existing volume.

Mute the app, not the whole Mac

The keyboard mute key silences the current system output. If you only want to silence a browser, game, or media app, a per-app mute control avoids interrupting everything else.

VolumeDirector places a mute button on each app row. Muting one row does not change the volume of other apps or the Mac’s master output.

Mute a single app

  1. 1

Play audio in the app you want to silence.

  2. 2

Open VolumeDirector from the macOS menu bar.

  3. 3

Find the app and choose its speaker button to mute it.

  4. 4

Choose the same button again—or move its volume slider—to restore sound.

When an app is not visible

An app normally appears after it begins producing audio. Recently active and pinned apps can also stay visible. If an app is missing, start playback, confirm System Audio Recording access is enabled, and reopen the menu.
