What per-app audio routing does

macOS normally sends every app to the output selected in Sound settings. Per-app routing lets you keep the system default while choosing a different destination for one app—for example, music on speakers and a call in headphones.

VolumeDirector provides an output menu beside each active app. The route is remembered, so a preferred device can be restored when it reconnects.

Choose an output for an app

  1. 1

Connect the headphones, display, USB interface, or other local output you want to use.

  2. 2

Start audio in the app, then open VolumeDirector from the menu bar.

  3. 3

Open the output menu on that app’s row and choose the destination.

  4. 4

Repeat for any other app. Each app can use one output at a time.

Supported routes and fallback behavior

  • Built-in speakers, wired headphones, Bluetooth, USB, Thunderbolt, HDMI, displays, and compatible aggregate outputs can be used.
  • AirPlay and per-app microphone routing are not supported in this release.
  • If a preferred output disconnects, playback falls back to System Default instead of stopping.
  • When that device returns, VolumeDirector restores the remembered route automatically.
